New Offerings in Middle School
Excitement is building for new electives, sports, and class trips starting in 2022-23.
Summer may just be getting started for our students, but here at CWA the campus is buzzing with activity as we get ready for a new year and new opportunities for our students to enjoy in the fall and beyond. Middle Schoolers especially are looking forward to a robust electives program full of new class offerings, an expanded roster of sports options, and exciting new trips for each grade level.
New Electives Program
We are excited to announce a new electives program for the Middle School beginning in the fall of 2022. Our goals for this program include:
- Providing opportunities for deeper, hands-on learning in a self selected area of interest.
- Creating a sense of belonging among those who share similar areas of interest.
- Building comfort in taking risks by creating opportunities public products and public performances of work.
- Connecting with a wider community of those interested in the same area.
While all students will still participate in our comprehensive liberal arts program, this is a chance for them to take a deeper dive in an area of their interest.

Extended Time for Athletics
Athletics have always been an important part of the Middle School experience and are built into the school day so that all of our students have the opportunity to participate. To further develop our Middle School Athletics program, we are adding a few new sports and increasing the length of practices and the total minutes spent weekly.
All Middle School students may choose from a full roster of athletic offerings, including:
- Cross-country

New Experiential Education Trips
Central to the CWA experience for decades are opportunities that take students off campus to encounter new challenges, new cultures, and new ways of thinking about the world we share. We are thrilled to announce new grade-level opportunities for our students beginning next year:
Sixth Grade – New York City in May
- The focus of this trip is national history and culture. Students will visit Ellis Island, the 9/11 Museum, and the Empire State Building. In addition, they will see a Broadway musical, tour the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and explore Central Park.
Seventh Grade – Washington State Outdoor Education in spring and fall
- Students learn from nature, develop survival skills, and make historical connections.
- Fall 2022 – Two nights at Mt. St. Helens Institute
- Spring 2023 – Backpacking on the Washington Coast
Eighth Grade – Puerto Rico in January
- During this exciting international opportunity, the focus is on global stewardship, collaboration, and local history. Students will work with community organizations to better understand the impact of extreme weather and will help repair damage to the environment.
