Charles Wright Academy Selects 5th Artist in Residence

January 20, 2023

Charles Wright Academy has named Erin Morrison as its fifth Artist in Residence. This program was established in 2017 to allow students to learn from a working artist. It is the only program of its kind in Washington state.

Ms. Morrison will work from a studio space in CWA’s Visual Arts Center, providing many opportunities for students in Beginning School (preschool) through Grade 12 to visit her, observe her process and ask questions.

This spring the whole community will be invited to see her completed work at an art exhibition.

Ms. Morrison studied painting and sculpture at Memphis College of Art and UCLA, where she received her Master of Fine Arts degree in 2014. Her work is informed by issues of Social Justice, Reproductive Rights, and the implications of the expansion of Western Colonialism on global relations. Often spanning the languages of abstraction and representationalism, she embraces analog methods of production, including gypsum cast bas-relief, printmaking, and ceramics, as a means of bringing in the viewer to have a physical dialog with the intricacies of her work.

Ms. Morrison recently moved to Tacoma from Hong Kong with her husband and two children.

Previous Charles Wright Academy Artists in Residence include Angela Gilmore (2022), a printmaking artist, Rohini Sen (2021), a folk artist in India, Mark Hoppmann (2020), and Andrew deGoede (2019), a painter.
